Commissioned for the 12th Seoul International New Media Festival, Unexpected Guests, Returning Ghosts continues a series of projects that explores immediate physical space, the internal space of memory, and the virtual spaces of digital media. While the first version of the installation collected an array of live Internet radio feeds from around the globe, this installation uses an archive of sounds recorded locally throughout Seoul. As light is reflected off a pair of slowly moving mirrored windows, sounds are triggered by an array of light sensors organized throughout the gallery.
After its debut in Korea, Unexpected Guests, Returning Ghosts was recently re-installed in Seattle at the second annual Onn/Of Light Festival, curated by Susan Robb and Sierra Stinson. (Onn/Of photos courtesy Kelly O’Neil)
